IB DP Chemistry R3.1 L5 | Water Equilibrium and the Ion Product Kw | Lesson Walkthrough

Use water equilibrium and the ion product Kw to relate hydrogen-ion and hydroxide-ion concentrations.

Compare strong and weak acids and bases through extent of ionisation and experimental evidence.

Predict equilibrium shifts caused by concentration, pressure and temperature changes and distinguish these from changes in K.

Explain dynamic equilibrium in a closed system and distinguish equal reaction rates from equal concentrations.

Write equilibrium constant expressions from balanced equations and use stoichiometric coefficients as powers.

Calculate equilibrium constants from composition data using careful concentration bookkeeping.

Interpret the magnitude of an equilibrium constant and explore how its value changes when the equation is transformed.

Calculate the reaction quotient and compare Q with K to predict the direction of net reaction.

Construct ICE tables and solve for equilibrium composition using exact algebraic methods.

Use and test small-K approximations, then solve mixed equilibrium-composition problems.
